Tolling Services

The R. I. Lampus Company can process materials of any kind that are too fine to be used in their current condition, and return the material in an easily handled, dense, low surface area form.

Integrated Steel Mills

Briquetted silicon carbide slabs are commonly charged into Basic Oxygen Furnaces as a hot metal extender and fuel source. The heat generated by the burning of SiC allows a greater percentage of steel scrap to be used in the BOF charge. The silicon carbide can also be used to bring a heat back to temperature if cooling has occurred during a delay.

Electric Furnace Shops

In carbon steel Electric Arc Furnace shops, granular silicon carbide can be used as a slag de-oxidant. The R. I. Lampus Co. also processes arc furnace mill recyclables of all kinds to address ever-changing environmental and economic demands placed on the end customer.

Iron Foundries

Briquetted products are used extensively in iron foundries. In cupola melting, the briquettes serve primarily as an alloying source, providing silicon and if desired, chromium and manganese, although additional alloying agents are available. Spar additions sometimes influence the fluidity of cupola slags. Carbon and/or silicon carbide additions, act as supplementary fuel sources to the coke charge and can increase melt rates.

In coreless furnace melting, our bagged 90% Silicon Carbide Grain is routinely used as a silicon source and de-oxidant. Our bag weight control of +/-1 lb. per 50 lb. bag helps to ensure that the melt shop experiences no surprises in recoveries.
